Battlefield Tours to the great moments of world history

Battlefield tours go back to 1975, when Tonie and Valmai Holt formed Major and Mrs Holt's Battlefield Tours to offer escorted battlefield tours to the battlefields of the First World War and Second World War, in conjunction with the Military Book Society. Tonie and Valmai sold Holts Battlefield Tours in 1993, and in 2003 Holts Tours became part of Titan Travel.

In 1993 Midas Battlefield Tours was formed by Alan Rooney and Ian Fletcher. They ran many military history tours to the battlefields of WW2 and WW1 as well as Napoleonic, Peninsular War, Crimean War and Zulu War and Boer War historic tours. Midas Battlefield Tours' style was friendly, convivial and commanded a great loyalty. Midas Tours went on to become the largest independent battlefield tours operator, before joining with Holts Tours, the combined company being run by Alan Rooney.

Some three years after leaving Holts Tours, Alan Rooney formed The Cultural Experience, which offers high quality battlefield tours, historical tours and military history tours. Each history tour or battlefield tour consists of small, amicable, erudite, groups of like-minded people led and guided by internationally renowned lecturers such as Major Gordon Corrigan, James Holland, Professor Jeremy Black and Digby Smith. Battlefield tours run by The Cultural Experience will explore, examine and interpret the scenes where momentous events in military history occurred. Enjoying a variety of superior dining in local restaurants with cerebral conversation, The Cultural Experience’s small groups stay in excellent, unique, sometimes boutique hotels and often historical in stature or location.

The Cultural Experience military history tours programme has been devised by people with a passion for military history and an eye for the ground. Our battlefield tour guides are great raconteurs who can bring a mundane wheat field or a barren wasteland to life and place you in the heart of the battle. Sharing and debating that experience with others who might draw contrary conclusions from the day's exploration over dinner or in the bar is a tremendous way to end the day.
